about

I had gone through and made this track initially with the guitar coming much earlier, a slow a capella at the beginning and some other bits and pieces that really didn’t mesh at all. After two more major attempts at wiping the slate clean I got this. The first movement was meant to paint a picture of a sort of ethereal space for the ‘healer’ that eventually features in the songs story. Fading to the pianos and strings we have a shift of view to ‘a person’ slowly making his way to this place. As the song unfolds, it was meant to be almost a conversation between myself and an other worldly healer where I would finally allow myself to show the scars and wounds I had been hiding and seek to mend them. The sort of mystical-medical language in the lyrics inspired the title ‘Autorraphy’ which is a play on the medical suffix used to describe surgical operations, specifically with sutures. ‘Auto’ being the prefix in this context to represent ‘the self’. I liked the theme so I kept it going. I am also not a medical professional, but you might’ve guessed that already.

lyrics

Sutures for a cost
Truths the sinew, exposed
And the vultures tore it off
Less the pain, barren pockets have me hoping, wayward and lost
Beckon the medic with choruses for His names
And water for the dross?
Spares in low supply but a mirror works all the same

Silver sheens and twin locked eyes
Trim the weeds and catalyse your
worth to free from paralysed
thoughts unruly, sanitise
your self

Mind the weight, it’s been so long
What’s torn’s restored but scarred enough behind the tape you rested on
Self-disdain had you blinded to its holding payment and tossed...
Your worth to the earth but forfeited just the same way
Sign the date and look along
See the glowing sky? it’s clearer now today

Azure screen for dream sore eyes
Bliss, the deed, unanalysed
Four words to breathe and canonise what’s taught to me and memorised
This too shall pass

Porch is for the cot
And babe asleep under two proud shadows
Technicolor thoughts and days to dream in pews and narrows

Young and for the fold
His weary heart strays
Plunge you lucky soul it’s different now
But toughened on the roads that veers and parts ways
Touch your cornerstone it’s better now
